While the subscription licensing model can add value to customers who need a lot of technical support or (in the case of cloud computing) a lot of storage space, it can cause other customers to pay too much for services. For example, if you store few photos or documents per month in your cloud, even the minimum storage space you subscribe to can go way beyond what you actually need or use. In fact, there was a time when indeterminate licensing agreements were the only ones in terms of software. That has changed since then, and many software companies now offer subscription services or annual licenses. Or remember the fact that you have to buy a number of licenses in advance for each person who uses the product instead of buying one software for all. It is often a price that many forget to take into account. Not only that, but what happens if someone leaves and you decide not to take on the role? There is an unused license on which you do not collect fees. Many people like indeterminate licensing contracts because they only have to pay once for the software, and then, as needed, they pay for technical support and all software updates.
However, with this structure, you risk outdated your software in case of technological changes. The video game you purchased 10 years ago with an indeterminate license agreement may not be compatible on the brand new computer you just bought. So you may be able to buy new software every two years to make sure you stay up to date, compatible with other people`s new hardware and operating systems. Subscription software is often referred to by an acronym – SaaS, which means “software as a subscription.” In all these cases, the resolution of the problem would fall on you, the customers. But if you use subscription software, the software company would be there to help you solve any problems that arise – no additional cost added. Suppose you pay 25% of the upfront fee for this annual support and upgrade. You pay for your software every four years. Subscription for indeterminate software, what`s the difference? One of the advantages of subscription licensing is that updates and hotfixes work in real time (how many of us have had to sit in front of our computers and wait for our operating systems to be updated when you turn them on or off?), so you don`t risk outdated your software, which is a problem with unlimited licenses.
